Health Effects: It may colonize plants, humans, and other mammals, especially the immuno-compromised. Rhodotorula species are isolated as causative agents of opportunistic mycoses in vulnerable hosts, such as patients with AIDS or acute leukemia, although such cases are quite rare. Diseases linked to this genus include meningitis, endocarditis, peritonitis, endophthalmitis, fungemia, and sepsis.

Rhodotorula is a genus of reddish yeasts typically found in moist environments such as carpeting, cooling coils and drain pans. It is also commonly found in air, soil, lakes, ocean water, and dairy products.
